The Moose Mountain Rogaine took place on June 8, 2002 and began at the West Bragg Creek parking lot, located approximately nine kilometers west of Bragg Creek, Alberta. Thirty-eight competitors constituting fourteen teams braved the miserable weather as the temperature hovered around zero degrees Celsius with steady rain. At slightly higher elevations, the competitors would encounter snow. Hypothermia would be a real threat throughout the competition. Two formats consisting of four and eight hour time limits were available. Despite the poor weather conditions, most teams choose to do the eight hour format. Both formats would start at 1600h.
At 1545h the teams were given some last minute instructions for the event and by 1605h most of them were on their way. Volunteers Bill Jarvis and Jody Lilley and I spent the next while putting the walls up on the tent in an attempt to stay dry. Within one hour, we were inside the tent watching the Stanley Cup playoffs courtesy of Linda and Francis Saville, who also volunteered at the event and brought their motorhome complete with satellite dish(es) and television(s). We ‘roughed it’ in the tent as we watched the hockey game and ate cookies while a 40,000 btu propane heater blasted in the background. After about three hours, the first teams began to return to the start area.
Many of the teams found the course very challenging. The course was set on a Canadian National Topographic System (NTS) map with a scale of 1:50,000 and contour interval of 100 feet. A total of 1000 points were available over a 35 kilometer course that had extreme amounts of elevation gain. Navigation, physical, and mental ability were further tested by the inclement weather conditions.
The results of the events were as follows:

Thanks to all the competitors who showed their toughness by continuing to participate in the event. Also, thanks to the following individuals who volunteered: Bill Jarvis, Jody Lilley, Meredith Vaillancourt, Linda Saville, and Francis Saville. Furthermore, thanks to Brian Toews who helped set the course.
Cheers,
